For more than ten years, La Rioja Alta, S.A. has had a cooperation programme in place to help third world countries. This year it was renamed ‘Viña Ardanza Solidario’ and the company has increased funding from 0.7% to 1% of its profits with a minimum of €100,000. Yesterday, it received the Empresa Social 2017 award from Fundación Mundo Ciudad in the ‘Best CSR Winery Project’ category.
La Rioja Alta, S.A. marketing manager Eladio Araiz collected the award at a gala dinner in Barcelona. The jury underscored the extraordinary social work carried out by La Rioja Alta, S.A. since 2007, when it became the the first winery in Spain (and one of the few Spanish companies) to make an annual donation of part of its profits to philanthropic causes related to its business; in this case, agriculture. Since then, the Haro winery has already allocated more than €710,000 to international cooperation projects.
It is an award of great national and international renown. For Board Member and Head of the Viña Ardanza Solidario Allocation Committee, Maite de Aranzabal, “it fills us with joy and, above all, encourages us to continue advocating on justice and solidarity. Thanks to our small effort, many women and men live better. It also showcases this work, encouraging other companies with profits to do the same.”
The great news of this award came just a few weeks after La Rioja Alta, S.A. announced the cooperation projects selected to receive its financial support during the year. Following a strict and exhaustive analysis of submissions and proposals, four NGOs were selected to receive full or partial funding for their initiatives thanks not only to the winery’s net profits but also to the personal contributions made by Directors, shareholders, winery employees, companies and others.
The beneficiaries are: Acción contra el Hambre and its project Pastos de Vida to improve nutritional and economic food security in three cattle grazing communities in Mali; ONGAWA with its programme Strengthening the Shenguena Agricultural and Marketing Network in Tanzania; Derandein with the Pablo Horstmann Foundation and its sustainable garden projects to ensure food security in an Ethiopian orphanage and child clinic and, finally, ICLI-Ingeniería para la Cooperación with an educational and production project in the DR Congo. All projects have been periodically evaluated, audited and controlled by the Viña Ardanza Solidario committee since 2007 so that shareholders can be can be assured that their funds are put to good use.
